The Program

Aster Aging, AZCEND and Tempe Community Action Agency have partnered to develop the East Valley Senior Home Sharing Program. Collectively our agencies serve over 10,000 older adults across the valley and we are individually known to be among the most established and trusted nonprofit organizations.  Together we are experts in the area of senior aging and homelessness and have partnered together to support seniors with an innovative and preventative solution to the housing insecurity many older adults are facing.

Did you know that currently half of the people who become homeless in Arizona are over the age of 50? Seniors are the fastest growing population experiencing homelessness with many paying over 30% of their household income towards rent. Additionally, loneliness and social isolation has become a serious public health risk affecting approximately one-quarter of older adults. With the cost of housing and other basic needs continuing to rise and the increased risk of social isolation, new solutions like the East Valley Senior Home Sharing program become important pieces to the full community of care offered by our organizations. 

The East Valley Senior Home Sharing program is based on best practice models from across the United States and connects  pairs of older adults to share living space and expenses. First, we conduct an intensive assessment and onboarding program including background checks and verification of finances for your safety and security. Second, we provide matchmaking services to ensure roommate compatibility.  Third, we provide post move-in services such as problem solving and conflict resolution.  We also offer a full array of wrap around supports including access to benefits, financial aid, nutritious meals, transportation resources and other ongoing supportive services.
